Variations of Heavy Metals Concentration in Suspended Matter and Physiochemical Properties in the Coastal Surface Water of the Gulf of Aqaba

Variations of heavy metals concentrations (Pb, Zn, Ni and Cd) in suspended matter as well as the physical properties (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH) at five coastal sites and one reference station (offshore) were measured on seasonal base of the year 2005. Seasonal variations of seawater temperature, salinity, pH and dissolved oxygen were significant different, meanwhile; spatial variations among different stations were not significant. Temporal variations of heavy metal concentrations were significantly different (P< 0.001); the highest concentrations were detected in spring 0.003 and 0.137 ppm for Pb and Zn respectively. Very low concentrations of Cd (not exceed 0.001 ppm) were detected in autumn and winter. Very low concentrations of Pb, Zn and Cd metals were detected in all sampling stations except Ni the concentrations were ranged between 0.12 and 0.108 ppm; however, variations among different sampling sites were not significant (p= 0.84)

Evaluation of Some Physiochemical Parameters and Heavy Metal Contamination in Hara Biosphere Reserve, Iran, Using a New Pollution Index Approach
Background: The pollution of the aquatic environment with heavy metals has become a worldwide problem during recent years, due to their potential toxic effects and ability to bio-accumulate in aquatic ecosystems. Heavy metals are sensitive indicators for monitoring changes in the aquatic environment. Methods: In this study, total concentrations of Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Fe were measured in water...
Speciation of heavy metals in coastal water of Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf
Fuel storage tanks are one of the main sources of water pollution as well as loss of crude oil and oil products in refineries. In the process of utilization of these tanks, considerable amounts of hydrocarbons may find their way into the coastal water, which eventually lead to loss of valuable hydrocarbons. Oil type, climatic condition and characteristics of oil tanks are among the main variab...
Study of Metals Concentrations in Surface Sediments of the Persian Gulf Coastal Area (Bushehr Province)
Since heavy metals are considered as one of the major pollutants threatening, the main goal of this study was to bring out the concentrations of Pb, Zn and Mn in the surface sediments off Bushehr in the Persian Gulf. For this purpose, after collection of samples, the concentrations of the three metals in surface sediments were measured through the atomic absorption. The results were compared wi...
Heavy metals in coastal sediments of South Caspian Sea: natural or anthropogenic source?
This paper focuses on heavy metal distribution patterns in sediments of central Guilan (CG) and east Mazandaran (EM) in the south Caspian Sea coasts, north of Iran. Sediment sub-samples were retrieved from core and surficial samples in different environments of marine and coastal lagoons as well as coastal outcrops. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry and Atomic Emission Spectrometry (...

Levels of the heavy metals Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (Model 67OG) in coastal water, sediments and soft tissues of the Saccostrea cucullata, from the intertidal zone at five stations in the Gulf of Chabahar on the Iranian coasts along the Oman Se...
